Virtual Fence

Virtual Fencing is a livestock management tool that allows producers to monitor and control livestock using technology. Virtual fencing uses a base station, which acts like a cell tower connecting to the on-animal devices or collars. Producers then you computer software to control and edit virtual fence lines.

Collars use a GPS system to stop livestock from exiting a set area. Livestock receive a warning sound from the collar as they approach the boundary and then when reaching the boundary receive a shock.

Virtual fence can be used in areas that are difficult to access, are wildlife habitats, areas where producers need to avoid trespassing problems and in areas that need to achieve grazing or rest rotation.

SCCD deployed virtual fencing for the first time in 2023. In 2023 approximately 460 cows were collared, grazing 15,000 acres. In 2024, 1,300 cows are to be collared, grazing 120,00 acres. It is currently estimated for 2025 that 4,000 cows will be collared, grazing 370,000 acres.
